Ep. 005: Brendan D'Anna and the Golden Handcuffs He Finally Cut
Brendan D'Anna worked 24-hour shifts at the firehouse, then jumped straight onto a private ambulance running cross-state transport jobs. That was the plan: stack the jobs, clock the years, get to the pension. Five years short of the finish line, he broke his foot.
Nobody would have blamed him for staying.
He left anyway.
In this episode of The Grit Factor Podcast, Karl Jacobi sits down with Brendan D'Anna, a former 15-year firefighter turned full-time real estate entrepreneur based in Myrtle Beach, SC. Brendan gets into what it actually cost him to wear the golden handcuffs for 15 years, what it felt like to walk away from a brotherhood he'd known since he was 19, and what the first year on the other side really looked like. Spoiler: it wasn't the freedom montage.
He also talks about rebuilding his inner circle from scratch, going deeper in his faith, and how his wife made the same leap from teaching not long after. This is not a highlight reel. This is the real version.
What You'll Learn:
- The question Brendan asked himself after breaking his foot that made him realize the safety net had become a trap, and why the honest answer scared him
- Burnout wasn't dramatic. Here's what it actually looked like in his house for two years before he ever quit
- He told nobody at work before he walked out. Here's why that mattered and what happened when his own father pushed back
- The honeymoon phase was real, but January hit hard. How Brendan navigated the self-doubt even during his best income year in real estate
- Rebuilding your inner circle from zero: what "trimming the fat" actually looks like when you're doing it for real
About Brendan D'Anna:
Brendan D'Anna served 15 years in fire service starting at 19 in Myrtle Beach, SC. He earned his real estate license in 2016 while still on the job and grew his business year over year before walking away with five years left to a full pension. He now runs a full-time real estate business and is rebuilding a faith-based community from the ground up in Myrtle Beach.
What Brendan carried for two to three years before he finally quit isn't just his story. In The Reforged framework, it has a name: Resistance. That's the phase where you already know what has to change, but everything in and around you is working to keep you exactly where you are. The pension. The brotherhood. Your dad. Your own mind at 2am.
Maybe you haven't broken your foot. But there's a version of that quiet, building dread in your life too. Something you've known for a while that you keep not acting on. Maybe someone in your circle called you crazy when you shared your idea. Maybe you talked yourself back into staying just one more year.
That's not weakness. That's what resistance feels like before the breakthrough.
The 5-Day Reforge Challenge was built for people in that exact in-between place. If you're tired of sitting with what you already know you need to do, five days is enough to start closing the gap.
